Roslyn High School’s high-powered offense was on full display again last Friday night as the Bulldogs secured a big, 36-20 lead, before holding off Carle Place/Wheatley, 36-33, in the team’s final road game of the season.
The game was also Roslyn’s first night game of the season, as the regular season finale this Friday will be a home night game.
But day or night, the aerial show by Adam Combs and his select group of receivers is always on display. Roslyn fell behind 7-0 early in the first quarter, before scoring two touchdowns, one on a 49-yard pass from Combs to Jackson Krush and the other on a 45-yard pass from Combs to Krush. After Carle Place rallied to tie the score, Roslyn grabbed the lead for good on a 4-yard pass from Combs to Prince Butler. The Bulldogs rounded out their 16-point second quarter with a one-yard touchdown run by Combs. In the third quarter, a 17-yard pass from Combs to Joe Cinque gave Roslyn a two-touchdown lead. Playing at home, Carle Place battled back, scoring touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters. However, Roslyn’s offense was able to run out the clock, giving them the win and improving their record to 5-2.
“We were down a few players, but Combs had a monster game,” head coach Mike Cocoran told The Roslyn News. In the win over Cold Spring Harbor, senior Aaron Winston suffered a ligament injury that ended his season, but the Bulldog offense had little trouble improvising.
Combs had his usual fine passing game, connecting on 10 of 22 attempts for 210 yards and four touchdowns. Winston was sidelined, but the Bulldogs star quarterback had plenty of targets to choose from. Krush had three catches and two touchdowns, while Joe Cinque, Marc Azouley, Nat Epprecht and Prince Butler also hauled down receptions. Butler ran for 70 yards on nine carries, while Combs continued his own running game, carrying the ball 21 times for 48 yards. On defense, Combs recovered a fumble that lead to Roslyn’s second score.
This Friday, the regular season, as noted, comes to an end with a 6 p.m. home game against Clarke High School. This year’s graduating seniors are: Aaron Winston, Jackson Krush, Brandon Abizadeh, Lucas Broncato, Andreii Castelblanco, Brian Pierce, Justin Wilkins, Damon Schneider, Kyle Lin and Navid Shamsdiba.
The game is a perfect occasion to thank these fine athletes for their winning performances and all-around sportsmanship. It is also ab opportunity to cheer on another great Roslyn squad as they hope to complete a winning season with a big win for the home crowd fans.
