The excitement was palpable as the participants lined up along Colonial Parkway in anticipation
of the annual Manhasset High School Homecoming parade.

Lead by the American Legion and followed by members of the marching band, color guard and cheerleaders, the parade kicked off at about 2 p.m., working its way down Plandome Road, as members of the community and alumni lined the streets and cheered.

Homecoming_102815aFor the first time, all of the district schools were represented as fifth and sixth grade students from Munsey Park and Shelter Rock joined the secondary school at this year’s march. Manhasset Soccer Club and Cub Scouts Pack 101 also participated along with the district administration and members of the board of education. As is the tradition, high school students threw candy to the crowds as they passed by to the delight of many of the children along the route.

HomecomingCThe highlight of the day was the debut of the floats built by the high school students. The class of 2016 led the way with an Olympic themed float entitled “Dream Big” which included an awards podium. The Tower Time Machine was the creation of the class of 2017 which displayed old pictures from prior classes on a replica of the Manhasset High School “Tower,” complete with a spinning clock. The float was accompanied by, not only the present members of the class of 2017, but alumni from past classes and elementary students representing the future of the school. The sophomores theme were “Rolling in the Green” with a Monopoly themed float. Last, but certainly not least, the freshman stepped up their game and rode the winning float inspired by Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, complete with Willy Wonka and the golden ticket.

HomecomingCThe celebration continued onto the Manhasset football field as the Indians rolled to a 35-0 decisive victory over the Jericho Jayhawks. The Indians were in control from the first snap of the ball running over the Jayhawks with an unstoppable ground attack. Ryan Damico took it to the house with a 59 yard punt return for a touchdown, increasing the Indian’s lead to 20-0 with under two minutes remaining in the first quarter. Jack Miller rushed for 112 yards on 13 carries, scoring 2 touchdowns and Will Theodoropoulos also scored twice for Manhasset.

At the half, the newly crowned state champion Manhasset High School Marching Band and Color Guard performed the music of Star Wars. In the second half, the Indians held the Jayhawks scoreless and cruised to an overwhelming victory.
