Saturday, Nov. 7

Nassau County will be hosting a Veterans Day parade throughout the Village of Westbury on Saturday, Nov. 7. The parade will honor Korean War veterans and former Nassau County Veterans Agency Director Joseph Pascarella. The route begins in the LIRR commuter parking lot on Union Avenue at 10 a.m. and ends at 373 Maple Ave. in Westbury. Following the parade, light refreshments will be served at the Westbury VFW Post #945. For more information contact Director of the Veterans Service Agency Ralph Esposito at 516-572-6565.

On 50th anniversary of Vietnam War, Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage will host the play, “Piece of my Heart” honoring American women who served during that conflict with free seats being offered. The first performance will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 6 p.m. An encore matinee performance will be held on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. Free seats are being offered to the public on a first-come first-serve basis courtesy of the sponsors by emailing info@musuemofamericanarmor.com though attendees may offer donations to the museum following the performance. Sunday, Nov. 8

Veteran’s Day Concert with the Freeport Community 30-Piece Band will be held on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m. at the Elmont Memorial Library Theatre. Join us for a musical tribute to our military branches with greats like “Victory at Sea,” “Band of Brothers,” and “Musical Memories of WWII.” Enjoy marches and period love songs that brought hope to those stressful times. The color guard of Elmont’s American Legion Post 1033 will also be attending. This event is free and open to the public.

Tuesday, Nov. 10

The Port Washington Public Library will host Topical Tuesday: The Guns of August 1914, with Don Parker. Join for an in-depth exploration of this period in American history on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 3 p.m.

Wednesday, Nov. 11

Friendly’s restaurants will pay tribute to veterans and active military members this Veteran’s Day, by treating them to a free breakfast, lunch or dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Eligible guests are invited to start their morning with Friendly’s Big-Two-Do, a hearty meal that’s sure to satisfy any appetite. For veterans and active military members who would prefer to dine at Friendly’s for lunch or dinner, the restaurant is showing their appreciation with a complimentary All American Burger, served with fries and a beverage (soda, iced tea or hot beverage).

The United Veterans Organization of Hicksville will be holding their Veteran’s Day Ceremony on Wednesday, Nov. 11. The ceremony will take place at the Hicksville Middle School Veteran’s Memorial Park, on Jerusalem Avenue, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Members of the American Legion (Charles Wagner Post #421), Catholic War Veterans (Joseph Barry Post #1946), Jewish War Veterans (Gieir-Levitt Post #655), Military Order of the Purple Heart (Long Island Chapter #417), Vietnam Veterans of America (Nassau County Chapter #82) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (William M. Gouse Jr. Post #3211) will participate in the ceremony. American Legion Commander Greg Faling will be this year’s Master of Ceremonies.

In celebration of Veteran’s Day, participating IHOP restaurants will honor the brave men and women who have served, and are currently serving in the United States military. From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 11, IHOP will offer free Red, White, and Blue pancakes to veterans and active duty military to, in some small way, thank them for their bravery and service to the country.

Tuesday, Nov. 24

Nassau County Veterans Services Agency’s Winter Stand Down will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Freeport Armory, 63 Babylon Tpke. VA benefits counseling, support services, health screening, legal advice, haircuts, dental, clothing and many representatives of federal, state and local agencies. Volunteers are also needed. The Veterans Rights Project focuses on veteran-specific legal issues but will also consider other issues, primarily public benefits, for veterans with income under federal poverty level.
