Carmelo Sapuppo, owner of P.S. Burger on Second Street, plans to serve up sweets and java one storefront away from his burger spot after obtaining Mineola Village Board approval on Wednesday, Nov. 18. The coffee shop at 196 Second St. will succeed the Florist and Gift Shop, which shuttered in 2014.

“This will definitely serve a niche,” Sapuppo said. “There’s a need for a place that people can stop in, get a quick cup of coffee, sit down for a little bit and then continue the day.”

Sapuppo plans to open a 700 square-foot shop that will serve coffee and desserts while operating Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“We’re installing 28 seats,” architect Henry Monteverde said. “There’s no cooking on the premises. We’ll have about five employees.”

Sapuppo previously owned Maxxells in Garden City Park and PastaVino in Mineola. He opened P.S. Burger in February 2014.

“I love to see commerce come into town,” resident Joanne Frank said. “With the expansion of Winthrop [-University Hospital] and what’s going on there, I think it will service patients and caregivers that need to get away for a second and get coffee.”

The corner of Mineola Boulevard and Second Street has developed quickly with two shops opening in the last year. Spaghettini Pizza Trattoria opened late last year before Burrito Blvd., a fresh Mexican food restaurant, held its grand opening earlier this month. Both are owned by Joe and Pasquale Vetrano.

“I’ve been doing business in Mineola for 20 years now,” Sapuppo said. “I intend to continue here in the downtown.”
