cropped-cropped-cropped-logo_header1Temple Judea invites the community to a two-part Musical Adult Education series presented by Cantor Abbe Sher.

Cantor Sher’s professional career began in childhood, performing on stage, radio and television, including singing with Roberta Flack at the age of 12. Prior to going to cantorial school, Cantor performed extensively in opera and received two master’s degrees in opera and studied at the Eastman School of Music for the Arts, Boston University for the Arts and Boston Conservatory. Cantor Sher has considerable experience in musical comedy and oratorio.

The series begins on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. with Sephardic music specialist Gerard Edery. He will astound us with his mastery of the guitar and speak about Sephardic music, recognized as a leading musical folklorist, a master singer, and a guitarist with remarkable range of ethnic folk styles and traditions. He is recipient of many awards and grants, including The Sephardic Musical Heritage Award and a “Meet the Composer” grant for his original songs. Edery performs regularly in concert halls and festivals throughout the world, including Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center and international festivals.

The series concludes on Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m. with a Klezmer event. Clarinetist Ken Maltz will discuss the history of Klezmer music, followed by a performance by Maltz and Cantor Sher. Maltz was a founding member of Kapelye, the pioneering Klezmer band, and is known throughout the world as a leading figure in the Klezmer revival. In addition to performing, he has composed musical scores and sound effects for Bantam Doubleday Dell audio books, including the Star Wars series, which features his music alongside that of Oscar-winning composer John Williams.
