Village Debuts TV Channel

Westbury residents flipping through the channels might see someone they recognize on the tube—themselves.

The Village of Westbury recently launched its very own public access channel. Cablevision customers living in the village can find VOWtv, which airs community-interest programming, on channel 18.

“We are pleased to be able to provide our residents with village-related programming that will inform, entertain and update our community throughout the year,” said village mayor Peter Cavallaro. “It just provides another outlet for communication and providing information.”

Cavallaro said the public access channel is provided in the village’s cable contract, and this is the first year the municipality has decided to take advantage of it. The channel currently has three hours of programming, including videos and photos from recent village events and a bulletin board of pertinent information, airing on a loop. The historical society’s recent presentation on the life of Al Posillico, the VFW Hall dedication and programming the village did with the Town of North Hempstead on housing issues, are currently airing.

Village staff received training on how to put up the programming and while they’re looking to introduce longer and more varied content, Cavallaro noted that would take additional resources, including equipment and staff. They plan to ask community organizations if they have materials they would like added to the channel. Cavallaro said he is also looking to see if bringing the programming to Fios customers is a possibility.
