The Wheatley School auditorium was replete with melodic music recently as the talented Intermediate Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, Intermediate Chorus and Intermediate Concert Band entertained the appreciative audience.
Under the direction of Angela Luftig, the 20 members of Intermediate Orchestra performed “Toccatina,” Jingle Rock,” “Concourse” and “Fandango Asturiano fr. Capriccio Espagnol” on violin, viola, cello and bass.
Luftig also directed the small but powerful dozen members of the intermediate chorus. English teacher Rick Leidenfrost-Wilson accompanied the group on piano as they sang “Flying Free,” “Gloria for All Seasons” and John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s “When I’m Sixty-Four.”
Music teacher Stan Orlovsky directed the Concert Orchestra as the 25 violin, viola, cello and bass players performed Vivaldi’s “Allegro in D,” Elton’s John’s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King and concluded with “Slava!”
Orlovsky, along with colleague Dr. Peggy Ho directed the massive Intermediate and Concert Band as they played John Philip Sousa’s “The Thunderer,” followed by “Sparks” and “Jubilance.” The more than 50 person group had nearly as many members as the previous three groups combined and blended beautifully as they played flute clarinet, bass clarinet, French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone, electric bass, percussion and alto, tenor and baritone saxophone.
The conductors thanked the parents for encouraging the students in their musical endeavors, acknowledged how far the children have come in a few short months and thoroughly appreciate how dedicated they all are.
