A Sound Beach man was arrested for allegedly driving drunk and causing the crash that killed his 28-year-old passenger in upstate Clermont over the weekend, New York State police said.

Andrew Casey, 22, was charged with vehicular manslaughter and driving while intoxicated. A Town of Livingston Justice Court ordered him held without bail.

Troopers said Casey was driving a Chevrolet Blazer northbound on State Route 9 when the SUV left the roadway and struck several trees and a utility pole before it came to rest down an embankment on Saturday evening.

His passenger, Andrew Clarke, of Red Hook, was partially ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined Casey was intoxicated, took him into custody and had his non-life threatening injuries treated at Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital. The investigation is continuing.
