Emma Lu of Great Neck was one of three students from high schools in the area who will be honored on Wednesday, Jan. 27, by the Long Island University (LIU) Post Art Department at its awards presentation for Advanced Visions 12: High School Artists of Excellence.
Students were chosen in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Lu, along with the other selected students, was chosen by her teacher to represent her high school, Great Neck South, in the exposition.
The exhibition of these students’ works acknowledges the high-quality and advanced art pieces of high school students in Portfolio Preparation art programs, Advance Placement and International Baccalaureate throughout the Island.
Lu was given a Juror’s Award for her oil painting, “Self Portrait Study.” Her teacher is Katherine Saltoun.
The two other students who received this award were Kate Walker from Bethpage High School for her oil painting, “Egg Sandwich,” and her teacher is Courtney Young. Leoder Sanchez from Hicksville High School won an award for his mixed media
work, “Tafla,” and his teacher is Beth Atkinson.
Cristina Lomangino, the exhibition coordinator, remarked, “This year’s work is an excellent example of a wide selection of media and content. It is evident that each piece is personal to the artist and conveys real talent in form at such an early age.”
The awards presentation and reception will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Awards will be presented at 7 p.m. The exhibit will be on view in the gallery through Jan. 27 on the main level of the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library building on the Post campus of LIU, 720 Northern Blvd. in Brookville. For gallery hours, call 516-299-2464 and for directions, call 516-299-2611.
