LIRR: Service Partly Restored by Monday Commute

LIRR blizzard

Long Island Rail Road trains will mostly begin rolling again Monday morning 37 hours after service was suspended Saturday when a blizzard hit the region, but some lines remain snowed in.

As of 5 a.m. Monday, regular weekday service will be available on the Babylon, Ronkonkoma, Port Washington and Huntington/Port Jefferson branches and service will also be provided in diesel territory on the Oyster Bay and Port Jefferson Branches, between Greenport and Ronkonkoma and on the Montauk Branch west of Speonk, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

But snow still needs to be cleared from the tracks before trains can resume running on the other four of the LIRR’s 12 branches. Lines that will remain suspended Monday include the Far Rockaway, Hempstead, Long Beach and West Hempstead branches. Commuters who ride trains on those branches are urged to use alternate LIRR branches until their usual trains return.

In addition, trains will not be running by Monday morning between Jamaica and the Atlantic Terminal. LIRR riders normally destined for Brooklyn should take trains to Penn Station, where their tickets will be cross-honored by NYC Transit on the No. 2 and 3 subway trains.
