The Bayview Avenue Bookclub started out as a very small group of five women, all neighbors on Bayview Avenue. They took turns hosting in their homes, serving wine and finger foods and discussing the latest book before segueing into their own personal stories of babies, preschool and careers. Seventeen years later, they are now a group of 20 women, most of them still residing on Bayview Avenue, but some on neighboring blocks.
Every year, they look forward to their annual holiday bookclub party in December. They always have a grab bag, which adds to the festivities, but a few years ago they decided to donate a portion of the grab bag funds to a local charity or a family in need. This year they donated to Blessings in a Backpack of Port Washington. Blessings in a Backpack is a nonprofit organization that feeds school children in the U.S. who currently are fed during the week on the federally funded Free and Reduced Meal Program and are at risk of going hungry on the weekends. Go to www.blessings inabackpack.org for information.
The Bayview Avenue Bookclub is
reaching out to other local book clubs to
ask if they would consider donating to
a local charity of their choice next year.
