North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Councilmember Viviana Russell and The Greater Westbury Council for the Arts will host a Black History Month celebration on Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m., at the “Yes We Can” Community Center in New Cassel. The theme of this year’s event is “Hallowed Ground: Sites of African American Memories.” Part of the evening will focus on sites in North Hempstead that are important to Black History.
“We are pleased to once again invite the community to celebrate this significant event with us and to focus on these sites that are important to North Hempstead’s African American history,” said Bosworth.
The audience will be entertained with performances from the band DeVerne and the Vintage Soul and students from the Westbury School District. Awards will be issued honoring prominent African American members of the North Hempstead community. One honoree will be selected from each council district.
“This celebration allows all of us to reflect on the great leaders of African descent in our community and our appreciation for all they have done for us,” said Councilmember Russell.
“It is extremely important that we take every opportunity, not only during the month of February, to celebrate our rich and unique cultural heritage; but more importantly to ensure that this rich legacy is passed on to our children and future generations,” added Arts Council Black History Celebration Chair Pat Jenkins Lewis.
