On Tuesday, Jan. 26, several Port Washington Girl Scout troops visited town hall for a mock town meeting.

Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio said, “I enjoyed welcoming the
Girl Scouts to our mock town
board meeting at town hall and showing them how local government affects their daily lives. Teaching children the importance of being involved in the community and government is something that is a priority for me.”

The Scouts from Port Washington, Troops 407, 411, 419, 429, 423 and 459, learned about the history of the town government, how board meetings work and the roles of the elected officials. Forty-two Girl Scouts attended the meeting.

“The TONH frequently hold mock town meetings for Scouts and
school groups,” said Councilwoman De Giorgio.

During the meeting, Scouts are chosen by their troop leaders to play the role of the elected officials.Girlsscout020316D copy Girlscouts020316A copy Girlscouts020316B copy Girlscouts020316C copy

“We had a mock topic about whether or not plastic bags should be banned in the town,” said Councilwoman De Giorgio. “We had an in-depth discussion and the girls voted on it.” The town is not actually considering that law but uses the topic for mock meetings.

Town Clerk Wayne Wink was also at the meeting.

“We had a lot of fun today,” said Councilwoman De Giorgio.
