The first big blizzard of 2016 is finally withering away. Looking back at the blast, dubbed Superstorm Jonas, Village of Roslyn officials had both good news and bad news.
“A crew was out there non-stop,” said a village officials, speaking of the work performed by the Department of Public Works (DPW). “They did an excellent job. Very few complaints and nothing warranted.”
Village officials, however, did have complaints about the county’s role. Village officials said that the county Department of Public Works undid much of the work that village workers had achieved. There are only two roads leading two and from the village from Mineola Avenue. Village workers plowed those two roads. County workers, meanwhile, plowed Mineola Avenue. Village officials claim that county workers plowed their snow onto the roads leading to the village, blocking both the entrance and exit roads. On Thursday, Jan. 28, county workers, village officials said, blocked the entrance to the village hall on 1200 Old Northern Blvd. Village officials said that such blockage was more than just an inconvenience, it is also a safety hazard.
Nassau County officials, however, said that side streets are the responsibility of the local municipality.
Superstorm Jonas almost broke the record recently for the largest New York snowstorm when it dropped 26.8 inches in Central Park. The all time record is 26.9 inches and was recorded in 2006.
However, the storm did break the record for most snow fall in one day and dropped more snow on the city in that day than the average for an entire winter, which is 25.1 inches.
