Gurfein For Congress

Just after incumbent Congressman Steve Israel (D–Huntington) announced on Jan. 5 that he will not seek reelection
this November, Retired Marine Lt. Col. David “Bull” Gurfein
(R–Manhasset), who grew up in Great Neck, announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination in New York’s Third Congressional District. Though he has never held elected office, Gurfein formed a campaign committee in September and is the only hopeful to formally announce his candidacy.
“I am proud and honored to announce our campaign for the U.S. House of Representatives,” said Gurfein. “Our team has been hard at work for months laying the groundwork for success in this campaign.”
Gurfein’s campaign manager Matt Kirincic said, “With Steve Israel’s retirement, we expect there to be plenty of horse trading for this open seat among the career politicians. David has been committed for several months and has already raised $250,000. He is a tenacious political outsider who is in it to win it.”
Leaders on Long Island and around the nation have already realized the promise of Gurfein’s campaign. Last November, the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) named Gurfein to its Young Guns program, which recognizes strong candidates. As a participant, Gurfein and his team will have the committee working closely with them.
“I am running because I am concerned about the world in which my daughter, Avery, will be growing up,” said Gurfein. “Seeing the turmoil that is occurring at home and abroad, I feel obligated and compelled to take action and have a positive impact.
“Americans are tired of ineffective career politicians. Internationally, threats from terrorists and others continue to escalate, raising well-founded concerns here at home. Nationally, extreme partisan politics are tearing at the fabric of our nation, hindering our ability to work together. Locally, the tax burden on Long Island goes unabated by career politicians, placing an undue strain on hard-working households. It is time for a change,” said Gurfein.
Though Gurfein grew up in Great Neck, he now calls Manhasset home. As quarterback, he led Great Neck South to its first and only undefeated football season, while leading the charge to permanently retire the school’s Confederate flag. He is a U.S. Marine who enlisted as a private and retired as a highly decorated lieutenant colonel. He served throughout the world as an infantry officer to include operational tours in Panama, the First Gulf War and Guantanamo Bay. He left active duty to attend Harvard Business School, and began his business career at Goldman Sachs on Wall Street. He served as COO for a high-tech start-up in Israel and then as national sales manager for a premium sports apparel company on Long Island.
After the terrorist attacks on 9/11, Gurfein requested that he be recalled to active duty. Once back in uniform, he saw combat action in Afghanistan and Iraq. Prior to retiring, Gurfein served as a congressional liaison for the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe and the Special Operations Command. After 25 years of service in the Marine Corps, he retired to focus on his family and raise his young daughter.
