Rebecca Sassouni, Esq., and Jacqueline Harounian, Esq., took the oath and were sworn in to the United States Supreme Court on Feb. 22.
The Great Neck lawyers were each admitted to practice at the High Court as well as in the State of New York.
Sassouni, of Rebecca Sassouni, Esq., PLLC, is a solo practitioner, who limits her practice to representation of students of all ages in various school settings facing issues related to disabilities, bullying and/or disciplinary actions, such as suspension and probation.
Harounian is a partner at Wisselman Harounian & Associates, specializing in matrimonial law along with a broad range of other legal representation, including family law, estate planning and real estate transactions.
Sassouni and Harounian’s visit to the High Court was made possible by the Hadassah National Attorneys Council, and, specifically, the Yashar Attorneys and Judges Chapter of Hadassah. This chapter, established in 1994 by a group of Jewish woman lawyers and judges who saw a need for networking and felt a strong desire to give back to the Jewish community and Hadassah, has the distinction of being the only such professional chapter in the nation. Sassouni is a charter member and Harounian currently serves as Yashar’s president.
Sassouni and Harounian joined 14 colleagues from Hadassah’s National Attorney Council as they were sworn in to the United States Supreme Court Bar. “The swearing in was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Sassouni and Harounian. “We greatly enjoyed the opportunity to meet fellow Hadassah women and men who are as passionate about Israel, law and civic activism as we are.”
At the official swearing-in ceremony, Pamela Talkin, the 10th marshal of the Supreme Court, spoke to the group over lunch and the group was given a private tour of the Supreme Court Library, including the rare books room. The ceremony was performed before the entire court and the admittees heard the reading of court decisions and oral arguments for two cases.
“This event is certainly the peak event in our program year, and for the participants, a highlight of their professional and volunteer life,” said Hadassah National Attorneys Council’s Swearing-In Cochair Deborah Kahn, Esq. “The council provides forums for our members who are attorneys to lend their expertise to Hadassah as it advocates on issues important to women and the Jewish community, network on a professional and social level, attend Hadassah-led professional seminars as well as continuing educational programs run by Hadassah and participate in journeys on missions to Washington and Israel.”
The National Attorneys Council also engages in a program in which Hadassah partners with other American organizations as a friend of the court in briefs that focus on issues within Hadassah’s policy, such as women’s health and First Amendment freedoms.
