Citizen Of The Year To Be Honored

The Community Chest has selected Blanca Fabian as the 2015 Citizen of the Year for her remarkable contributions to the Port Washington community. She will be honored at a ceremony on Monday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m., at the Port Washington Library in the Lapham Room. The Citizen of the Year Award recognizes a lifetime of outstanding volunteer service on behalf of the citizens of Port Washington and has been awarded annually since 1969.Blanca030216A

Fabian arrived in the U.S. in 1978 from El Salvador and acquired her citizenship in 1987. She has been married to her husband Juan for 38 years and has three children. Since coming to Port Washington, Fabian has volunteered with churches and local organizations, often joining their board of directors. Fabian is a member of the St. Peter of Alcantara Church Parish Council (a planning and advisory board), she teaches in the religious education program and is a member of the Evangelization Ministry.

In 1997, Fabian joined the Boards of Directors of Port Washington Community Action Council and Cow Bay Housing, and she continues to assist both groups. Fabian is a board member of the Community Economic Development Corp., the Economic Opportunity Commission of Nassau County and Residents for a More Beautiful
Port Washington. Fabian volunteers for the Port Washington/Manhasset Chapter of Cancer
Care and is the president of the Family & Friends Council at the Sands Point Center for Health
& Rehabilitation.

Fabian has been recognized for her exemplary community service by the Town of North Hempstead, the Town of Hempstead and Nassau County. Now the Community Chest of Port Washington is honoring Fabian for her lifetime
of service to Port as its 2015 Citizen of the Year.

The Community Chest of Port Washington’s Citizen of the Year ceremony and reception are free and all members of the community are invited to attend. To honor Fabian and to raise money for its grantee organizations, the Community Chest prepares a journal and invites community members to support the journal. The Community Chest of Port Washington changes lives. In 2016, grants are being awarded to 25 nonprofit organizations that provide a wide range of vital services to residents of all ages—from three months to 99 years old. The Community Chest also provides office space at below-market rates to nonprofit organizations.
