National Merit Scholarship Program Finalist David Marques with guidance counselor Matthew McCauley and Principal Dr. Barbara Williams.

Massapequa High School senior David Marques was selected as a finalist in the 61st Annual National Merit Scholarship Program, an honor that places him among the top one percent of the nation’s brightest and most promising students.

Finalists are chosen based on outstanding achievement on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) and by maintaining stellar academic records, participating in school and community service activities, demonstrating leadership abilities and receiving honors and awards during all four years of high school.

Marques is in the running for one of 7,400 scholarships and awards valued at more than $32 million. He will be notified in the spring if he is a recipient of one of three types of awards: a $2,500 National Merit scholarship, a corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship award or a college-sponsored Merit Scholarship award.

“David is an outstanding student and an exemplary role model of academic and civic excellence for his peers,” said Massapequa High School Principal Dr. Barbara Williams. “We are proud of what he has achieved by taking advantage of the wealth of opportunities and rigorous coursework we have here at Massapequa High School.”
