On the morning of March 5, Port native Mary Johnson was involved in a tragic accident that has resulted in the loss of her left leg above the knee and two of her fingers on her right hand. She also suffered blunt force trauma to the right side of her head. She remains in critical, but stable, condition.
A GoFundMe account has been set up in her name to help her family with her medical bills. Go to www.gofundme.com/p7t8rknj to make a donation.
Johnson graduated from St. Peter of Alcantara School and Our Lady of Mercy Academy. She is a University of Notre Dame graduate, a valued member of the Teach for America Houston community and currently is in her second year of teaching at Ortiz Middle School. Not only is she a devoted ESL and reading teacher to her 7th-grade students, she also helps coach the Eagle Striders, an after-school running club that helps kids learn about health and fitness and experience 5K and 10K races around the city.
Her hospital stay, recovery and rehabilitation will be a lengthy and expensive process. She has touched many lives with her courageous, strong and larger-than-life attitude and smile that exudes happiness on a daily basis. Consider making a donation to help the Johnson family.
