Senior Boys Show The Way

After finishing a highly competitive regular season with a 5-4 dual meet record, the Manhasset High School swimming and diving team prepared for an exciting post season run. The first round of the playoffs was the divisional round. True to form, the Indians competed at a high level. Athletes who were tapered swam season best times and County qualifiers maintained their competitive edge to lead the team to a second-place finish out of nine teams. This is the fifth consecutive year the team has finished second.
Next up was the Nassau County Swimming and Diving Championships held at the Nassau Aquatic Center. The Indians held high hopes for another top-five finish in Nassau County.
The team had the fast start they were looking for when sophomore diver Paul Petrakis finished ninth in the County with a personal best score of 278.20 points.
On Friday, snow canceled the preliminary round of County swimming. Saturday’s event would now become a timed final. All qualifiers in each event would still swim and the top 20 finishers in each event would score points toward team totals.
“Not an ideal situation for our athletes,” stated Coach McGrane. “However, our seniors are exceptional and have been through a lot of adverse situations together. They set a terrific example for the underclassmen by their actions and show them tremendous support.”
Throughout the meet, Manhasset swimmers posted many personal best times and set three new team records. Sophomore Zachary Leng broke a 20-year-old 200 IM record in a record time of 2:03.05 The 200yd Free Relay team of Zach Leng, Nick Magliulo, Conor Beil and Biagio Raimondi set a new record time of 1:32.95, to finish fifth in the County.
In the day’s final event, the 400 Free Relay team consisting of Magliulo, Giardinelli, Beil and Leng set a new school record, finishing fifth in a record time of 3:22.30. When the meet was complete and the scores were read, the Manhasset team was thrilled at the accomplishment. The team finished in fifth place overall in Nassau County. There were 26 teams that competed in Nassau.

Beil, a graduating senior, swam a 1:48.78 in the 200yd Freestyle. Magliulo, a senior, swam a 50.39 in the 100yd Freestyle. Ryan Earley swam a 2:00.57 in the 200yd Freestyle and a 53.46 in the 100yd Freestyle. Mike Perulli swam a 24.31 in the 50yd Freestyle. Matt Alonso, a senior, swam a 2:00.65 in the 200yd Freestyle. Biagio Raimondi swam a 24.43 in the 50yd Freestyle. Eddie Lennon swam a 1:13.47 in the 100yd Breaststroke. Ryan Lee swam a 6:11.55 in the 500yd Freestyle and a 1:16.41 in the 100yd Breaststroke. Anthony Raimondi swam a 1:05.58 in the 100yd Butterfly.
George Theodosopoulos, a junior, swam a 56.82 in the 100yd Free.
Zach Leng, a sophomore, swam a 22.83 in the 50yd Freestyle and a 55.39 in the 100yd Backstroke.
Thomas Broderick, a freshman, swam a 2:12.16 in the 200yd IM and a 5:09.06 in the 500yd Freestyle. Giardinelli swam a 1:52.64 in the 200yd Freestyle. Luca Sodi swam a 1:04.01 in the 100yd Backstroke. Matt Kang swam a 54.77 in the 100yd Freestyle. Pat Weber swam a 6:06.43 in the 500yd Freestyle. Albert Liu swam a 1:17.24 in the 100yd Breaststroke.
