South High School’s music department continues its long-standing tradition, now in its 47th year, of presenting exceptional, full-scale student-performed operas. This year’s opera is Bizet’s classic masterpiece Carmen, which will be performed on Friday, April 8, and Saturday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium at 341 Lakeville Rd.

This ever-popular opera is a dramatic love story with memorable music and song. Carmen, a fiery, seductive gypsy, first flirts with Don José, a soldier, then takes another lover, bullfighter Escamillo, with tragic consequences.

Carmen will be sung in French with English supertitles. In addition to the high school singers and orchestra, a chorus of students from Lakeville and Saddle Rock Schools will be a part of the production.

The performance will be under the musical direction of Dr. Pamela Levy, conducted by Michael Schwartz and directed by Robert Stivanello. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, and may be reserved in advance, which is suggested, by calling 516-441-4851, or can be purchased at the door. There will be open seating for both performances.
