A retired Nassau County Police Department detective was killed after being struck by a car in Carle Place on Thursday, April 21 at 3:40 p.m.
to police, while attempting to cross Old Country Road on foot from the north side to the south side in the vicinity of Cherry Lane, Joseph G. Skowronski, a 65-year-old male from Mineola, was struck by an eastbound 1995 eastbound Nissan Maxima driven by an 18-year-old male.
As a result of the collision the pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver, who remained at the scene, was not injured. His vehicle was impounded for brake and safety checks.
The accident, which was deemed to be non-criminal, continues to be investigated.
Skowronski retired in July 2005 after serving 32 years with the NCPD. He began his career with the Nassau County Police Department in 1973 in the Fifth Precinct. He was promoted to detective in 1991 and was assigned to the Third Detective Squad and the Sixth Precinct, where he worked until his retirement.
As a detective, Skowronski worked on investigations in both the Narcotics/Vice Bureau and the Homicide Squad. His long and successful career in the Nassau County Police Department is reflected by the numerous commendations that he received for outstanding police work.
“He was deeply respected by his colleagues and everyone in our police family and we are grateful to have known and worked with him. Oh behalf of the entire Nassau County Police Department, we extend our sympathies to Joe’s family and friends,” said the NCPD in a statement.
