Congratulations are in order for Syosset athletes Bert Jablon and Pamela Lee, each of whom won awards at the Northwell Health 39th annual Aspire 10 Kilometer Run.
Jablon, 89, was the oldest finisher in the run, crossing the finish line in 1 hour, 27 minutes, 55 seconds, and was presented with the first place award in the 85-and-over age group. Lee finished in 55 minutes, 19 seconds, and earned the third-place award in the women’s 60-64 age group.
The event traversed a 6.2 mile course that started and finished at the H.B. Mattlin Middle School in Plainview, and 625 runners braved the rain to successfully complete the course.
Port Jefferson Station superstar Yuji Wakimoto took top honors overall with a time of 32:23, and Betsy Eickelberg of Leonia, NJ, was the women’s winner for the second consecutive year with a time of 37:09.
The host Greater Long island Running Club was thankful for a great team of sponsors that made the event possible, including Northwell Health, Jonas Chiropractic (with Dr. Steve Jonas on hand to be a competitor and Dr. Jon DeGorter of the Jonas staff on hand to cure the ills of all the runners after the race), Marathon Dental Laboratories, Mizuno & Runner’s Edge. The club also thanked the Town of Oyster Bay for its support.
Special thanks also went to Nassau County legislators Judy Jacobs and Rose Marie Walker for being there for the event once again, as well as to legendary marathon pioneer Nina Kuscsik for being on hand to start the race and to autograph bib numbers at the post race festivities.
