The senior class at Schreiber High School voted on Friday to determine the color of the graduation gowns that they will wear at this year’s graduation ceremony.
According to a message sent to parents from Schreiber Principal Ira Pernick, the results of the cap and gown vote for the Schreiber Class of 2016 are:
88 votes for the blue gown with white stole.
74 votes for the white gown with blue stole.
A total of 162 seniors voted.
Some parents were unhappy with the change so late in the year because they already purchased graduation photos that were taken through the school in the original gown colors—blue for boys and white for girls.
The gown color came into question recently when many students spoke against the tradition of blue gowns for boys and white gowns for girls, voicing their opinions about how these graduation gowns make students who don’t identify with a gender feel uncomfortable since they are forced to wear the gown of the gender they were born with.
