The Great Neck Memorial Day Parade Committee met to begin planning the 92nd Annual Memorial Day Parade, which will be held on Monday, May 30. The parade and ceremonies are held under the auspices of the Gilliar-Norwill Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post #372, Charles A. Fowler, Jr., American Legion Post #160, United States Merchant Marine Academy, Alert Engine, Hook, Ladder and Hose Co. #1 and Vigilant Engine and Hook and Ladder Co. Parade committee members include representation from all the participating organizations.
Great Neck Parade Committee Commander Louise M. McCann is excited to bring the parade “to life” once again and reminds the community that the meaning of Memorial Day is to honor those who gave “the full measure of devotion to our country.”
This year’s grand marshal will be rear Admiral James A. Helis, USMS, superintendent, United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. In accepting the honor of being chosen as the parade’s grand marshal, Admiral Helis expressed his appreciation to the committee and is “proud to represent those who serve and have served in our armed forces, especially those who have made the supreme sacrifice for our nation.”
The parade will include delegations from various local volunteer groups, including social, religious, nonprofit and student-based musical groups. Plus, several new groups will be marching for the first time. A large enthusiastic crowd of onlookers to cheer on the marchers along the parade route is expected.
Great Neck veterans are encouraged to participate in the parade and ceremonies, and may reserve a space and ride in a lead car at the head of the parade. They will also be given a place of honor with special seating on the Village Green. To participate, contact the parade committee in writing as soon as possible at PO Box 4486, Great Neck, NY 11023.
The parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the corner of Middle Neck Road and Susquehanna Avenue, and will continue north on Middle Neck Road to the Village Green. Concluding ceremonies honoring the fallen will be held at 11 a.m.
