MacArthur High School freshmen Ashleigh Lecca and Jennifer Gattus were recently named first-place ($200) and honorable mention ($35) winners, respectively, in the annual Martin J. Kelly Writing Contest presented by the Irish Cultural Society of the Garden City Area.

This year’s 588 entrants from Nassau County analyzed the rhetorical strategies used by the writers of the Proclamation of Irish Republic and read aloud during the Easter Rising, also known as the Easter Rebellion, in Dublin, Ireland in April 1916.

Both students were invited to attend an awards ceremony at the Garden City Library.
