Thank You Westbury Community

I thank the citizens of Westbury for electing me and Dr. Brown to the school board. Our resounding victory sends a message that change, accountability and performance results are sorely needed. I would like to thank all of the candidates for their commitment to serve and also the outgoing board members for their service.

As I reflected on my team’s two out of three clear wins on the morning following the shake-up of the WSD board of trustees, it is clear that our community demands higher educational performance, transparency and accountability in its actions, as well as prudent management of the $134 million annual investment on our children.

The right to vote is a privilege to be respected by all citizens as well as voting officials. As a second time public school candidate in 10 years, I witnessed an election system that was ill-prepared to accommodate a non-traditional voter base. On many occasions throughout the day, election poll watchers observed a climate that was hostile to non-English speaking voters. Instances noticed were a lack of courtesy in explaining the process, blatant impatience, rudeness and hostility which discouraged citizens from exercising their right to vote. Also, inaccurate marking and instructions at polling stations gave the impression that illegal electioneering was taking place.

As a new board trustee, I will ensure that future school board elections are better prepared and all voters are treated fairly, with respect and courtesy. We must make all citizens feel welcome at the ballot box.

My purpose and mission as a member of the school board is to be consistently focused on advancing the education of our children, while collaborating with all stakeholders in our schools, community, and government. Thank you again for your trust and confidence.
