Runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes from the Syosset-Jericho community and across Long Island and beyond are cordially invited to come to Plainview on July 17 for the 13th annual edition of the Heart & Sole 5 Kilometer Run/Walk. The event will once again be starting and finishing at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School, on Central Park Road and Southern Parkway in Plainview, starting at 8:30 a.m.

The 2016 event is being held in honor of Legislator Judy Jacobs, who is both the Northwell Health director of community relations and the Nassau County Legislator who has been so supportive of the running community. Proceeds of the event are going to fund scholarship programs and community outreach programs at Plainview Hospital and Syosset Hospital.

Race management will once again be under the direction of the Greater Long Island Running Club (GLIRC). Dr. Alan Mensch, senior vice president of medical affairs for Plainview and Syosset Hospitals and a long time member of the running club, will serve as the chairman of the event once again. GLIRC director of operations Linda Ottaviano and Ric and Kathy DiVeglio will once again be in charge of the GLIRC logistical effort.

In addition to the 5K main event, the run will be continuing the tradition, inaugurated in 2010, of a quarter-mile fun run on the track of the middle school for youngsters age 12 and under, with the theme of fighting the growing epidemic of childhood obesity.

The growing list of sponsors for this year’s run is headed by the fabrics and home furnishing company Kravet Inc.

Other sponsors include Central Island Healthcare, Huntington Hills Center for Health and Rehabilitation, North American Partners in Anesthesia, Medigas Service & Testing, Modern Sprinkler Corporation, Infertility Associates of Long island, Dr. Alan Mensch, Dr. Isaac Alamuri and the medical staffs of Plainview Hospital and Syosset Hospital.
The 5K run features a fast, flat USA Track & Field certified course, awards three deep in five year age groups, an outstanding technical shirt for each entrant, ample post-race refreshments and a generous array of post-race door prizes that includes two flat screen high-definition televisions.

For more information, contact Mike Polansky or Linda Ottaviano at GLIRC at 516-349-7646.
