Memorial Day marks the start of summer. The weather is warmer and the sun signals us to spend time outdoors. As kids, we spent summers outside from sunrise to sunset, soaking in every splendid second of the season.
As grownups, we find ourselves rushing to work, running errands and taking care of business—not ourselves.
Why don’t we vow to make this summer different?
Long Island is loaded with amazing attractions. We’re besieged by beaches, botanical gardens and Broadway. So many spellbinding spots surround us.
This summer, let’s reorganize our priorities. Save the laundry for a rainy day. Put errands on hiatus. Demand some downtime.
Slather yourself in sunscreen and savor the scenery.
Stroll around your suburb. Soak in the stunning surroundings. Smell the flowers. Catch up with neighbors.
Bicycle to the beach. Wiggle your toes in the sand. Feel the waves crashing against the shore.
Drive to a delightful destination. Dine alfresco at a community concert. Picnic in a park. Watch the sunset over the bay.
Long Islanders are so lucky to have access to a plethora of free performances sponsored by local villages, towns and the county. Go to the websites and check out the summer schedules, visit www.manhasset press.com or www.longisland
weekly.com for the latest events and be on the lookout for our summer edition of Gold Coast Magazine in your June 22 paper, which features some of our local leaders’ favorite hidden gems as well as ideas for fun day trips.
Make this summer extra special. Think about how your 12-year-old self would spend the day—and dive in with the same enthusiasm. After all, as my 98-year-old grandfather used to say, “Age is just a number.” And, my energetic 95-year-old mother-in-law reflects, “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?” So, regardless of your age, live your summer as if you’re still a kid. Enjoy your day in the sun.
