Carle Place High School’s Abigail Selhorn has been chosen to represent New York at this year’s Brine National Lacrosse Classic, a four-day long event that aims to showcase and foster competition among the most talented lacrosse players from across the country. The program offers Olympic-style training and exposure to coaches from some of the top collegiate programs.
The freshman attack will compete with and practice alongside other high-caliber female lacrosse players in the classic, now entering its ninth year, in Richmond, VA, from July 19-22. The young athlete tried out for the team in hopes of gaining more experience and training outside her high school varsity team and local club team, Icon Lacrosse.
“My goal is to get looks by college coaches and get more experience outside my little town playing with the best of the best,” she said. Selhorn, who has been playing lacrosse since she was about four years old, has grown accustomed to playing with the same group of girls for the past 12 years. Though she doesn’t know anyone playing on the Brine National Team, she is confident that she will form trusting relationships with the other girls, which will lead them to success on the field.
Selhorn has been competing for her school’s varsity lacrosse team, as well as varsity field hockey and basketball teams, since eighth-grade and has earned many accolades within the past two years. Last year, she was All-Division in basketball and this year earned All-County Honorable Mention in both lacrosse and basketball.
She recalls her favorite moment in all her years of playing lacrosse, when her high school varsity team narrowly defeated Locust Valley this year in quarterfinals with a score of 7-6, earning the team a spot in the Nassau County Championship game.
“I like the fast pace motion of the game. You’re always moving, you never stop,” said Selhorn regarding the nature of the sport. Though she has achieved much by just her freshman year of high school, she holds high aspirations when it comes to her future as an athlete. Her dream is to play Division I lacrosse at the University of North Carolina, where the women’s lacrosse team recently won the 2016 NCAA National Championship.
Selhorn looks forward to making more memories both on and off the field and earning valuable experience that she can bring home to her local teams.
