Congratulations to fifth-grader Nanami Horie of Guggenheim Elementary School in Port Washington, who is the New York State winner of Shade Foundation of America’s 2016 Poster Contest.
Shade Foundation of America is the only national children’s foundation devoted to skin cancer education and prevention. Nanami’s winning poster is an original color drawing of young people exercising different practices for guarding against melanoma, including wearing sunscreen and protective clothing, using umbrellas at the beach and being in shade whenever outdoors, and getting enough vitamin D through the consumption of fish. As a state winner, Nanami received a Shade Foundation backpack, a sun safety kit and an award certificate recognizing her creativity in spreading awareness and valuable skin protection tips.
Nanami was encouraged to participate in the contest by her teacher, Natalie Miller. Six other students from Miller’s class received UV wristbands for their participation in the contest.
A nonprofit organization, Shade Foundation of America was established to eradicate skin cancer and melanoma through the education of children, parents, teachers and the community throughout the United States.
