The Purple Heart, a United States military decoration awarded to those who are wounded or killed in battle, is the oldest military combat designation in present use. The Town of North Hempstead, which has a Veterans Advisory Committee that provides information about resources veterans might be able to receive, was designated as a Purple Heart Town in 2015. The Village of New Hyde Park is the first village in Nassau County to become a Purple Heart Village.
Councilwoman Lee Seeman, whose district includes most of Great Neck and part of New Hyde Park, was invited to attend the annual Memorial Day Parade under the sponsorship of VFW Post #8031 in New Hyde Park. While awaiting the ceremonies, Seeman met with Nassau County Commander Bob Chiappone and past Commander Conrad “Connie” Steers of the Nassau County Military Order of the Purple Heart. Chiappone spoke of the need to provide continued support to service men and women and veterans from past and present wars and conflicts. Past Commander Steers echoed that we must remember those who were wounded or made the supreme sacrifice to our great nation.
“We owe a large debt of gratitude to all our veterans, most of all those wounded or lost in combat,” reiterated Seeman. “I am truly grateful to be able to attend the ceremonies and honor those brave men and women today at the annual Memorial Day Parade.”
