The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) will host its 31st Annual Celebrity Golf Classic on Monday, July 11, at the Old Westbury Golf and Country Club.
Leonard Riggio, chairman of Barnes & Noble, Inc., is the 2016 Man of the Year.
The golf outing will be the biggest fundraising event of the year to benefit the foundation’s mission which is to grant children with life-threatening or terminal illness their special wishes. Registration and brunch will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. A cocktail and dinner reception, including an award ceremony, raffles and auctions commences at 5:30 p.m.
“Leonard Riggio, our honoree this year, has demonstrated his commitment to the Foundation’s mission,” said Marty Lyons, founder and chairman of the foundation. “We can count on him to help us make the dreams of our wish children come true. The members of our board, our volunteers and the families of all the children appreciate his support.”
The foundation is fortunate to have the financial support of the following major sponsors who have committed to participate in this year’s event to date: BDO USA, LLP; BNY Mellon; Cunningham Duct Cleaning Services; the LandTek Group; Milburn Flooring; Poten & Partners and the Riggio Family. Without their generosity, and the donations from others, this event would not be the success it is.
The Marty Lyons Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” Marty Lyons’ determination led to the establishment of the foundation after experiencing three life-altering events in March of 1982. These events forced him to “see the frailty, unfairness and the wonder of life.” With the encouragement of his family and friends, he formed The Marty Lyons Foundation in December of 1982. Since that time the organization has worked to keep hope alive in the hearts of thousands of children and provide support to their families.
The Marty Lyons Foundation provides wishes to children ages 3 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed as having terminal or life-threatening illnesses.
MLF is unique in that it will consider granting a second wish to a deserving child who may need the hope and inspiration to face the battle of their lives for the second time around. Since it was established, The foundation has granted 7,200 wishes that have brightened the lives of countless children. By playing a fun-filled day of golf or attending the dinner, supporters help provide the foundation with the much needed resources to fulfill its mission of granting children their special wishes. While golf foursomes are at a premium, you are welcomed to join the festivities during the cocktail hour and dinner.
