Garden City High School senior Michael Lohrer was recently chosen by the Council of Exceptional Children (CEC) as one of the 2016 Yes I Can Award recipients. Lohrer was honored at the CEC Convention and Expo in St. Louis, MO on April 15.
“The Yes I Can Awards honor children and youth with disabilities who are role models for others and have excelled in a specific area,” explained teacher Kat Squires. “Each year, the program receives hundreds of applicants from across the country for various categories. I nominated Michael for his academics.”

“Michael is the most hardworking student I have ever met and I am so excited for him.” Squires added. “The nomination required completing an application and writing a short essay about why Michael deserved the award. I also needed to include an artifact. For the artifact, Michael made a short video explaining why he works so hard in school, his accomplishments (like passing his Regents exams) and gave advice to other students.”
