The second-half 2016 general taxes for North Hempstead taxpayers were due on July 1 and payable without penalty until Aug. 10. If submitted anywhere from Aug. 11-31, a two percent penalty will be applied. If the taxes remain unpaid, this year’s general tax first-half and any penalties must be paid prior to or included with the second-half general tax. Mailed payments must be postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service on or before the last day to pay without penalty (Aug. 10). By law, office postage meters are not official postmarks (NYSRPTL-Sec 925). After Aug. 31, any unpaid 2016 general taxes, penalties and fees will be payable to the Nassau County Treasurer, located at: 1 West St. Mineola, NY 11501.
STAR Program Changes:
Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, new STAR applicants will need to register for the STAR Credit Program with the New York State Tax Department to receive a STAR check.
The amount of your benefit will be the same regardless of how you receive it. STAR exemptions apply only to school district taxes.
Current STAR Exemption Recipients:
Current Basic and Enhanced STAR Exemption recipients will be able to keep their exemption as long as they continue to own and occupy their current home.
Current Enhanced STAR exemption recipients who are not enrolled in the Income Verification Program must continue to file a renewal application with the Nassau County Department of Assessment each year.
