The Indians started the meet off by claiming nine points in the opening event of the 3K Steeplechase; Milton Pirsos earned All-County honors as he led a trio of Manhasset scorers which included junior Daniel Petruso and freshman Christopher Courts. The team picked up five more points in the 400m intermediate hurdles, with juniors Michael Chin and Michael Lee claiming fourth and sixth place, respectively. Gavin Olsen earned All-County honors as he single-handedly contributed 10 points to the team total, heaving the shot put 49’10”—a season best—and claiming fifth place in the discus with a throw of over 115’. In one of the most exciting races of the afternoon, Tim Courts came from more than 20m behind, erasing this margin over the final 300m of the 1600m to take the win in 4:28.
Sophomore teammate Ryan Watson continued his impressive season with a fifth place showing. Watson and Courts would return later in the 3200m, and in what looked like a replay from the division meet a week earlier, were lead by teammate Aidan Caggiano, who recorded a personal best of 10:05; Caggiano (second) and Watson (third) both earned All-County honors as the Indians took 2-3-4 to lock up 18 additional team points. Sophomore Jack Cyprus also had an impressive showing, taking third place in the 800m. Cyprus, who found himself back in the pack with less than 200m to go, surged to the finish to record a personal best of 2:01:6 and earn All-County honors.
The team, losing only Courts among their point scorers to graduation, is already looking forward to adding to their success next spring and bringing home another championship to Manhasset. With a stable of young runners already amongst the best in their class, the program certainly appears to be on the rise.
