Runners and walkers are invited to join in the fun at the Lynn, Gartner, Dunne & Covello Sands Point Sprint, one of the most unusual five kilometer courses on Long Island, on Sunday, Aug. 7.
The leading Mineola law firm of Lynn, Gartner, Dunne & Covello will be returning as the lead sponsor of the event, and partners John Dunne and Ken Gartner are both planning to run the race. Last year, Gartner finished the sprint in 28:13 and Dunne in 33:30—and both are looking to break those marks.
This year’s sprint will once again benefit the Sunrise Association, whose mission is to present the joys of childhood to children with cancer and their siblings worldwide through the creation of Sunrise Day Camps, year-round programs and in-hospital recreational activities, all offered free of charge. Sunrise Day Camps are the world’s only full-summer day camps for children with cancer and their siblings. The fun, friendship and smiles continue year round through various camp-like programs and in-hospital services.
The 5K presents runners and walkers with an opportunity to traverse a unique combination of paved roads and runner-friendly woodland trails at Sands Point Preserve throughout its 216 acres of natural and landscaped areas.
Forests, meadows, beaches, cliffs, gardens and a freshwater pond provide habitats for a variety of plants and animals, which create a unique 5K course that will enable participants to experience various aspects of the preserve.
Runners and walkers who sign up can expect awards in five-year age groups, ranging from 10 and under to 85 plus, as well as Clydesdale/Athena Awards, a commemorative T-shirt to every entrant and a variety of post-race door prizes. Once again, the post-run festivities will include superb refreshments courtesy of DiMaggio’s Trattoria and refreshing craft beers courtesy of Greenpoint Harbor Brewing Company.
