Editor’s Note: Lou Sanders, who has his journalism degree from NYU, and his wife, Grace, a graduate of Adelphi, founded the Mineola American in 1952, giving the village its first successful newspaper. Lou and Grace have lived in Mineola for 60 years, and his popular column is a signature feature of this paper.
Scott and Linda Fairgrieve will be celebrating their 40th anniversary on Oct. 2 at the Nassau Bar Association with many friends and family. They will be having a renewal of vow ceremony where Linda will wear her original wedding gown. Her son, Ross, will walk her down the aisle. Her daughter, Tara, will be the maid of honor, her son-in-law, Jim Anthony, will be the best man, and her grandson, Harrison, will serve as ring bearer, aided by her daughter-in-law, Ngoc Cong.

Republicans and Democrats that I talk to say enough is enough. This morning, noon and night, election, election, election, is driving people crazy. People are tired of hearing anything more about either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump. In France, they start the presidential campaign six weeks ahead of time. What a sensible idea that is.

Lino Ferriere and his wife, Marisa, had a two-week visit to Portugal.

Margaret Irwin, who was a friend of mine in the Bristal Assisted Living, sent us a card about how much she missed Grace and me. Mary Lou and Jerry Chellis also called me on the phone saying that they missed me at the Bristal and wished I was back.

Brother Paul Llorring was my companion in the physical therapy exercises here at Maria Regina Residence.

If ever a man was devoted to his son, it is Dan Flynn. Dan spent 20 years with the New York City Police Department in the Emergency Unit. Now he devotes his entire life to helping his son. The Flynns live on Kenilworth Road.

Barbara Curran, the daughter of Joe Curran, longtime Nassau County detective, is here at Maria Regina Residence.

While here, I met Sister Helen Kearney, CSJ, a good friend of our daughter, Sister Annmarie. Sister Helen is the president of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood. I also met Sister Ann Rodger, OP who works as a volunteer here, another sister who knows our daughter and the work her organization does.

Slowly but surely, Mary Ann Guarino is returning to good health. As if she didn’t have enough trouble, she also has a bad sprain in her back.

People marvel over how successful Jack Gayson Plumbing and Heating Company is. We have to remember that Jack, Karen, and the rest of the family work every day. Many a time Jack came to my house on a Sunday.

Congrats to Frank and Stacy Granata who were just married. Stacy is the daughter of Steve Ford, the owner of Willis Hobbies, along with his brother, Ray. Ray is in charge of the second floor; Steve is in charge of the first floor. The business was started by their father, Al. Al’s widow, Peggy, resides in Florida.

Lisa Ganz recently moved to Williston Park. She is a social worker at the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence in Mineola. Her sister is Sister Heather Ganz who tends the organic garden on the property of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood. She tends a large plot of land, raises chickens, goats and rabbits, and has a deep love for people and the soil. She goes out of her way to be helpful to others.
