Selichot Services Held At Temple Judea

SelichotTemple JudeaSelichot, a holy day that Jews worldwide devote to introspection and prayers for forgiveness, was celebrated recently at Temple Judea of Manhasset. Rabbi Todd Chizner and Cantor Abbe Sher led the evening service, which announced the beginning of the High Holy Days. In Jewish tradition this is a period of looking back and also looking forward for changes that can be made in the coming year.

The evening included an talk by Irving Roth, the director and curator of the Holocaust Resource Center, an integrated part of Temple Judea. Roth began his address by discussing the people who lived in Germany, Poland, Hungary during the 1930s, who were led to believe, through often repeated and loudly-stated lies of the Third Reich, that the Jews were responsible for losing World War I as well as for other difficulties their countries experienced, resulting in the Holocaust.

Roth, a Holocaust survivor, has traveled the world over speaking to groups about the horrors of the Holocaust. The address was designed to inspire those present to learn from the past and apply those lessons in the present and the future.

The High Holy Days continue with Rosh Hashanah which starts on Sunday evening, Oct. 2, continuing on Monday Oct. 3 and Tuesday, Oct. 4. Yom Kippur begins on Tuesday, Oct. 11 and continue on Wednesday, Oct. 12. The community is invited to attend.
