Applications are available for the Ninth Annual Tom Zangas Memorial Lung Cancer Foundation/Archangel Michael 5K Run/1K Walk on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 9 a.m. at North Hempstead Beach Park, 175 Shore Rd. in Port Washington.
The race honors the memory and fight for life of Zangas, a triathlete and marathoner who died from lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 40. Proceeds from the race go to the foundation in its work to fund research into lung cancer and to Archangel Michael Church of Port Washington. Application forms are available at the Archangel Michael website, www.archangelmichaelchurch.org. Participants can register online and pay by credit card.
The Tom Zangas Memorial Lung Cancer Foundation was founded by Zangas’ parents, Leonard and Penelope Zangas, to honor his memory and raise funds to fight lung cancer. To date, more than $225,000 has been raised and donated for cancer research. Among the institutions receiving grants are Yale University, NYU Langone Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The grants have funded several areas of research including immunotherapy.
The entry fee for the race is $35 and is free for those 12 and under. Runners will compete in several age categories. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and a photo of them finishing the race.
Individual or corporate sponsorships are available. For more information, contact Leonard Zangas at 516-504-7000.
