Massapequa School District residents successfully voted on the sale of Carman Road School located at 1 Carmans Rd., Massapequa on Oct. 18. The building was sold to Nassau BOCES for $9 million, although some residents feel that the property is worth more than the amount it was purchased for.
The purchase included the physical school building and surrounding land, totaling 6.2 acres. The school district, however, will retain ownership of the adjoining athletic fields, which totals 3.6 acres, for continued use by student athletic teams and community organizations.
The $9 million proceeds were placed within a tax reduction reserve and will be used to lower tax increases over the next 10 years.
Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis expressed her appreciation to residents for getting out to vote.
“On behalf of the Board of Education and central administration, I wish to extend my appreciation to the Massapequa community for their support of the Carman Road School referendum” she said. “By showing their support for the transfer of the building to Nassau BOCES, they have ensured its continued use as an educational facility. The fate of the official transfer, however, rests in the hands of Nassau County voters.”
Since the sale was approved, Nassau County residents will now need to vote and approve the purchase of the building by Nassau BOCES before the title can be officially transferred.
