Great Neck Public Schools Community Education will offer plenty of special events this fall. Whether you wish to learn about the melodic life of Barbra Streisand, explore your musical and artistic creativity, play canasta at a beautiful venue or partake in an amazing Chinese banquet, lots of interesting events can offer a break from the ordinary and enlighten your day or evening.
The Iconic Barbra Streisand
One of the most commercially and critically successful female entertainers and the best-selling female recording artist of all time, Barbra Streisand has accomplished every goal she set for herself in the entertainment industry. Her career includes the Broadway stage, movies (as a performer, director and songwriter), television, concerts and recordings. This presentation by Marc Courtade, executive director of the Huntington Arts Council, will discuss the extraordinary life and career of the Brooklyn native on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m.; $20 for Great Neck residents; $35 for nonresidents.
Painting in Tune
An evening of fun, relaxation and creativity awaits participants of this three-hour event that’s geared toward those who want to paint and draw, but feel unsure because they believe they weren’t born with the art gene. In this friendly environment, paint in a non-objective manner while being inspired by music, as painting is a way to express not only what you see, but also what you hear and feel. Using colors, textures and lines, attendees will convey personal feelings and emotions for various musical compositions. Each participant will receive a set of paints, brushes and paper. Plus, refreshments will be served in this class led by instructor Amy Orange on Wednesday, Nov. 16, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.; $39 for Great Neck residents; $54 for nonresidents.
Canasta “Suits” Me to a “Tee”
Spend a fun-filled day with Judy Umansky and friends at the newest canasta event at the Harbor Links Golf Course. Begin with a continental breakfast in the Grill Room, overlooking the beautiful grounds, and then move into a designated card area for play. A full luncheon buffet will follow, consisting of a salad bar, tuna and chicken salad, grilled chicken, vegetable lasagna, assorted quiches and an omelet station with all the fixings. End with homemade cookies, brownies and fruit. Coffee, tea and soda, plus tips, valet parking and an attended coat room are also included. Preregistration is required. Register as a foursome, and bring your cards and trays on Wednesday, Nov. 2, from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; $74 for Great Neck residents; $89 for nonresidents. Chinois and Champagne
Savor a scintillating brunch of Chinese food and sparkling wines at the epitome of Asian restaurants, Pearl East. Cathy Huang’s executive chef will prepare a unique dish and provide a printed recipe. To enhance the day, Roslyn Huang, concert violinist and winner of the distinguished artist award, will perform a mini concert. Join Harriet Becker on Sunday, Dec. 18, at 1 p.m. at Pearl East, 1191 Northern Blvd. in Manhasset; $77 for Great Neck residents; $92 for nonresidents. Preregistration is required; participants must be 21 or older.
