Another Board Of Ed Candidate Withdraws

Michael Darvish, a candidate for the Great Neck Public Schools Board of Education trustee position, withdrew his candidacy due to unanticipated professional obligations on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

“Mr. Darvish’s decision followed the allowable time, according to New York State Education Law, for filing additional nominating petitions,” said Jessica Vega, public relations coordinator for the Great Neck Public Schools. “Therefore, Mr. Darvish’s withdrawal does not precipitate the reopening of the nominating-petition period. Mr. Darvish’s name will remain on the ballot as they have already gone to print.”

The election for the Board of Education trustee seat left vacant by the resignation of Monique Bloom will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 6.

Eighteen interested parties picked up applications, but ultimately, nine petitions for candidates wishing to run for the position were filed by the Nov. 7 deadline. However, on Tuesday, Nov. 8, the day after the filing deadline, the board received notice from Mariana Ristea that she was considering withdrawing. By Wednesday afternoon, she confirmed her decision not to run and submitted a letter withdrawing her candidacy on Thursday, Nov. 10.

The remaining seven candidates, in the order that their petitions were returned, are Donald Panetta, Josh Ratner, Nikolas Kron, Nicholas Toumbekis, Lori Beth Schwartz, Donna Peirez and Grant Toch.

Qualified voters residing north of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) vote at Baker School and qualified voters residing south of the LIRR vote at South High School. Both sites will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information, call 516-441-4020 on school days between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
