A driver was killed when he flipped his box truck onto several parked cars, causing some of the vehicles to burst into flames in Wantagh on Friday evening, Nassau County police said.

The driver was heading westbound on Sunrise Highway when he lost control of the truck and struck a guard rail, causing it to overturn on top of unoccupied parked vehicles at the Long Island Rail Road commuter parking lot near the corner of Seaford Avenue at 7:40 p.m., police said.

The driver, who was trapped in the truck after it caught fire, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was driving alone at the time. His identity was not immediately available.

Wantagh Fire Department firefighters responded to the scene and extinguished the flames. Sunrise Highway was closed for several hours while investigators were on the scene.

Seventh Squad detectives are continuing the investigation into the cause of the crash.
