Troop 10 Hikes Harriman

Troop 10 recently completed a hike on a beautiful, cool, sunny day—perfect weather for spending time outdoors. Eighteen Scouts and several adult leaders hiked 4.8 miles using topographic maps and compasses in Harriman State Park. They followed various paths, including the Appalachian Trail and the western branch of the 1777 trail, and took in several viewpoints of valleys, mountains and colorful fall foliage. From the northern end of the park, they could see Manhattan about 42 miles away.

Midway, at the West Mountain Shelter, they stopped to cook a hearty lunch using lightweight stoves. The Scouts had trail mix for extra fuel, adequate water to maintain proper hydration and for cooking, and plenty of energy for long ascents and steep, treacherous descents.
