A 74-year-old bicyclist was fatally hit by a car in North New Hyde Park early Wednesday morning.

Nassau County police said a driver was heading southbound on New Hyde Park Road when he struck a bicyclist that crossed into his lane of traffic near the corner of Marcus Avenue at 1:20 a.m.

The victim was thrown from his bicycle and when police arrived, they found him to be unconscious and unresponsive. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His name was not immediately available.

Homicide Squad detectives tested the brakes on the vehicle, which was released back to the driver. They are continuing the investigation, but determined it to be an accident.
