Herricks Scholastic Art And Writing Winners
Three students from Herricks High School’s English Scholars Program have earned Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. This program is presented by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers and recognizes teens’ creative works of writing and visual art.
Senior Arwa Ali achieved a Gold Key Award for her poem “Let’s Take a Step Back.” The Gold Key is the highest level of regional honor, and works that are distinguished at this level are judged by leaders in the creative industry with the potential to earn National Medals.
Ninth-grader Aroob Jalil received a Silver Key Award for her poem “The Monsters Among Us.” Kathryn Richie, also a ninth-grader, won a Silver Key for her short story “Frequent Flyer.”

Regeneron Semifinalists Of Herricks Honored
The Town of North Hempstead continued its tradition of honoring semifinalists from the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), formally known as the Intel STS, during a ceremony before the regular town board meeting at the town hall.
Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the board honored 22 semifinalists from six North Hempstead schools, including Herricks High School.
“It is always a pleasure to welcome and honor the semifinalists of the Regeneron Science Talent Search,” said Bosworth. “These students have the brightest and most creative scientific minds in the Town of North Hempstead.”

Poetry Honors For New Hyde Park Senior
New Hyde Park Memorial High School senior Rebecca Justiniano, a student in Katie Kaspar’s 12AP Literature and Composition class, received a regional award in the 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing competition, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.
Justiniano was presented with an honorable mention in poetry for her poem “His Are Red and Mine Are Purple, Sancocho, Accents.” Kaspar and Principal Dr. Richard Faccio extended their congratulations to Justiniano on this outstanding achievement.

Black History Month At Sewanhaka
The Sewanhaka High School Shared Decision Making Committee’s theme for this school year was “We are all pieces to one puzzle.”
Seventh-graders in Diane Ventura’s social studies classes decided to act on that theme and create a display for Black History Month. Seventh-grader Abigail Percy developed the idea, which was helped along by student Jasmine Rivera and her mother, who cut out the puzzle pieces. Students designed each puzzle piece with a different individual in mind to celebrate Black History Month. The end result was a powerful presentation that can now be seen outside Ventura’s classroom.
