Learn a new skill or take a class in a favorite activity at Community Ed. Many new courses are available in the Spring/Summer 2017 catalog, including Action Cinema, French Cinema, Art History, Calligraphy, Canasta Club, Under the Stars, Early American History: Age of Jackson, The Canterbury Tales: Slow Reading, Channeling Monet, Chansons Francaise, Excel and Word for Job Seekers, Knitting & Crocheting for Beginners, Painting on Silk, Speed Reading, Tennessee Williams: World Literature, Intro to Hebrew for the True Beginner and Yiddish Part II. Registration is in progress for classes starting in late April.
New day trips include Aldrich Art and The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion, Brooklyn Navy Yard and Private Artists’ Studios, Rembrandt at the Frick, The Museum of Arts & Design and The Rubin Museum of Asian Art.
The new special events are The Music of Hollywood, Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center, Aroma-therapy Workshop, Great Granny Squares, A Winning Day by the Bay, Canasta at La Parma and Dot! Crak! Bam! Beautiful Barto: Mah-Jongg Event.
Many of the regular classes are also available. In sports and fitness, classes will be offered in yoga, meditation, Pilates, ballet, Zumba, line dance, ballroom, tai chi, qi gong, body workout, cardio fit, hand-weight training, modern dance, classical dance: Duncan Technique, low-
impact aerobics, Latin-style aerobics and seated exercise and movement for those with Parkinson’s.
Fine arts and fine crafts courses include painting, watercolor, pastels, stone sculpture, pottery (on the wheel and hand building), jewelry making, metal clay, silversmithing, collage, printmaking, fused glass, Swarovski crystal and sketch drawing.
Classes will be available in English language and literature, such as Write Your Heart Out, Writers’ Workshop, Poetry Workshop, Joy of Reading Book Group, World Literature, Shakespeare and Biweekly Everyday English Conversation.
Foreign languages courses include Chinese for Travelers, French, Spanish, Italian, Hebrew and Yiddish.
Classes in the games and hobbies category include bridge, canasta and mah-jongg.
Humanities courses include Some History You Ought to Know, Current Events, Talking Baseball and Italy: City by City.
In the music and performing arts arena, classes, such as Singing for Fun, Cabaret Singing, Cumberland Singers and Piano, will be offfered.
Home, life, family, personal growth, personal finance and technology courses include Clover Drive Farms, Defensive Driving, Elder Law, Estate Planning, College Scholarships, Maximizing Social Security, Google Docs, iPhone Basics, Website Design, Communicate to Be Heard, Life Transitions, Dating Essentials and REAP (retired, energetic, active people).
Classes offered specifically for children and teens include Chinese Language, Creative Writing, Public Speaking, ACT and SAT/PSAT Test Preparation and Driver Education.
Community Ed also has myriad day trips available, where participants can enjoy all-inclusive excursions with docent-led tours, unique venues, round-trip transportation and gourmet meals. Upcoming trips include the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology on Thursday, April 20; Newark, City Tour, Houses of Worship and Branch Brook Park on Sunday, April 23; Chelsea Art Galleries and lunch on Tuesday, May 2; An Adventure in the East Village, walking tour and dinner at Hisae’s on Wednesday, May 3; Woolworth Building, tour and lunch on Sunday, May 7; Caramoor Estate, recital and house tour on Wednesday, May 24; and Madava Farms, in Dutchess County, home of Crown Maple Syrup, on Thursday, June 8.
Community Ed’s upcoming theater trip will be Groundhog Day, with lunch at Remi, on Wednesday, May 31. Recent offerings have included War Paint, Dear Evan Hansen, The Glass Menagerie, Oslo and Hello Dolly! Due to timing constraints, theater trips are advertised through email.
