SyoBasketball 41917A 1024x768 1The last time the boys basketball team at Syosset High School posted an 18-3 winning record was 41 years ago. With an overflowing crowd at the home of the Braves, history was made when Syosset beat a strong Calhoun team in double overtime with a final score of 76-72. It was the team leader, Griffin Halpern (29 points) and Jacob Wiener who each sank clutch free throws in the final 25 seconds of the second overtime that produced the first post season victory since 1991.

Co-captain Griffin Halpern

It was a magical season, beating every team in the conference with strong wins against Uniondale, Hempstead and Farmingdale. Home wins versus Freeport and on Massapequa on senior night were just some of the season’s highlights. All season, co-captain Halpern guided the team. As one of the best point guards on Long Island, Griffin was voted by conference AA1 coaches as Player of the Year and Scholar Athlete. In recognition of an incredible year, senior co-captain James Dionisio was awarded All-County honors, and co-captain Richie Rambarran earned All-Conference accolades. Underclassmen and returning players recognized by the county were juniors Jacob Wiener and Michael Stanco, and sophomore Robert Kula. All season strong contributions came from Dom Sciove, Tyler Trapani, Harrison Shouldice and Harris Baskin. Congratulations to coach Greg Cardona for winning coach of the year honors.
