The Long Island Press recently ranked among the top news websites in New York State at the New York Press Association (NYPA) 2016 Better Newspaper Contest held at at Gideon Putnam Resort in Saratoga Springs on April 7 and 8.

The annual awards competition, spring convention and trade show recognizes journalistic excellence across newspapers and media outlets throughout New York and has been held yearly since 1930. The Long Island Press historically scores high in the competition and dominated its 2010 and 2012 contests, clinching its highest honor, the prestigious Stuart C. Dorman Award for editorial excellence.

The 2016 contest included 2,957 entries from 184 newspapers and media outlets vying for accolades across 67 categories, including editorial, design, photography and advertising. Submissions were judged by members of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association.

The Long Island Press, which recently joined Schneps Communications‘ network of newspapers, magazines, news websites and events, earned high honors in three categories this year: the coveted Best News Website, Best Website Design, and Writer of the Year awards.

“Well-balanced and like the ease of the menu to locate what you are looking for quickly,” declared judges of the Long Island Press’ Third Place ranking in Best News Website.

The judges were also impressed with LongIslandPress.com’s “very clean” design, awarding the site and Long Island Press Director of New Media Michael Conforti Second Place accolades for Best Website Design.

Long Island Press Education Reporter Jaime Franchi brought home Third Place in the highly competitive Writer of the Year category, with judges gushing over her journalistic prowess across several genres of writing:

“Entertaining first-person infused glimpse of a unique running group in ‘Battle of the Selden Hills Warriors.’ Articulate opinions, with stark reasoning: ‘And then on Sunday, more than 100 people were shot, and 49 killed, in Orlando, Fla. And my priorities came into focus. I am a one-issue voter. My issue is guns. My candidate is Hillary,’” they wrote of her sobering opinion piece “Hillary Clinton’s Aim Has Always Been Clear on Gun Control.”

“Deft characterization in ‘The Brooklyn Banker,’” they wrote of Franchi’s colorful entertainment feature.
